Egredietur virga de radice Jesse et flos de radice eius ascendet et requiescet super eum spiritus domini (Isaias XI, 1. 2.).

We read today in the Mass that from the root of Jesse a shoot shall break forth, and from the shoot a flower shall grow, and upon the flower the Spirit of the Lord shall rest and rest back again. Jesse means as much as a burning brand; that is, love in purity, where it cannot yet be called love, where there is no alien accident. And in the ground, where it is still so pure, there it properly begins, just as there in the innermost that which is to grow from the root begins. Whatever is to grow forth from something must of necessity have three things in itself: likeness to that from which it proceeds, and almost that same thing, and it must be very near to the same nature; the third is that it be without addition, and this is properly a procession. Thus the Son proceeds from the Father and is another person beside the Father, and yet is the same in the Father in being. Therefore he says: “From the root goes forth a shoot; from the shoot goes forth a flower.” Whatever I love must have a heavenly power together with me, for likeness draws all things into one, and the same must be in the ground; and whatever grows from another is in every way very near to the same nature. If someone grafts an apple onto a pear tree, it tastes of both. Thus it should not be: it should taste of one alone. That same one is not within it, and yet is within it. It could never break forth from it unless it had first been within it in purity, in suspended being. Wine is in the vine and is not in it, and yet is in it.

I speak of divine freedom: that he can impart to no nature anything but one being. The first origin from God is the Son, and the Son is other than the Father and yet is power; and from the two of them the Holy Spirit blossoms forth. Our masters say: the sun draws the flowers from the root through the tree, very nearly without time and so purely that no eye can see it. The soul, which in the ground has no nature, in the ground of love, where it cannot yet be called love, must step out of nature; there God lies in wait for her. Whatever is borne into being becomes very nearly that same being. When the bride thus comes home to him, he takes possession of her and works with all the power that he can bring forth, in his ground, in the innermost, where there is nothing that does not work wholly. The tree of the Godhead blossoms forth from the ground; at the root the Holy Spirit breaks forth. The blossoming flower, or the delight, is the Holy Spirit. The soul blossoms forth from the Holy Spirit with the Father and with the Son, and upon the flower the Spirit of the Lord shall rest and shall rest back again. He could not rest back again unless he had first rested upon the Spirit. The Father and the Son rest upon the Spirit, and the Spirit rests back again toward them as toward his origin. What is rest? Saint Augustine says: rest is a deprivation of all movement and a taking away from body and soul of their own nature. A master says: God’s property is immovability. All creatures are movement. One must have come beyond movement. Jesse means as much as a fire and a brand, and signifies the ground of divine love and the ground of the soul. From the ground grows the shoot, that is, in the purest and in the highest, and it proceeds from the first ground, where the Son breaks forth. From the shoot goes forth a flower; the flower is the Holy Spirit. We ask our dear Lord God that we may thus rest in him and he in us, to his praise. May God help us to this. Amen.
