A first encounter

New to Eckhart? Start here.

Three short passages to begin with. Take your time; there is no right order.

Stillness

A still place within

Where might we find a quiet place within ourselves?

“But in the ground there is the middle silence; here alone is rest and a dwelling for this birth and for this work, that God the Father there speaks His Word.”

Letting go

Holding on a little less

What might it mean to stop holding on so tightly?

“A poor human being is one who wills nothing, knows nothing, and has nothing.”

Love

Love without a why

What happens when love is no longer a means to an end?

“Whoever now dwells in love dwells in the goodness of his nature and dwells in God’s love, and love has no why.”

Tractate — Chapter 17

About this edition

This is a bilingual reading edition rather than a critical edition. The Middle High German text remains visible beside the English translation so that readers can compare the two directly.

Sermon numbering follows Franz Pfeiffer’s 1857 edition. Modern DW/Quint numbering can differ, while the tractate chapters form a separate sequence of their own.
